When is the best time to plant roses? (Against a south facing wall)...

Almost any time... Here in the western U.S. I transplant new roses in the fall and early spring... Spring is probably best in order to give the plant time to establish a root system before winter...

Hi Clanad.....i was surprised to receive your answer to my question, not because of it's content which I appreciated, but because of the distance between me and you. You live in the west of the United States and I live in Lowestoft in the east of England. I didn't think A/B stretched that far. How are things with you temperature-wise? it's below freezing here, must be the same with you i suppose! John

We've had an unusually severe winter john1066... In January and December we had extended periods where the temperature didn't get above -10F in the day. We've had a lot of snow (nearly 80 inches total with about 18 to 24 on the ground.) We're on a cattle ranch near the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains and therefore occasionally receive the benefit of a local weather phenomena known as the "Chinook"... westerly winds blow across and down the mountains compressing the air as it decends and warms it greatly. We're in a stage similar to a famous painting by a world famous western U.S. artist named C.M. Russell, seen here:

Any way... I regularly exchange posts with people all over the world... so I wouldn't be surprised about the extent of participation in the Answer Bank...

You should plant roses in January in the south of the UK, but firm in when frosts are around in case they lift.
