Fast food is everywhere, as are good diners, though food a decent diners is not what I would call cheap, it is good value. Top places will charge up to $65 per head ex drinks for an evening meal. Mc Donalds is about the same in dollars as it is here in th UK in pounds, but the restaurants are dirtier. There is planty in between. PLanet Hollywood is surpirsingly cheap, but when you see the food you see why!
If my memory is right, the cost of dining in New York City was slightly higher than London. Like London, you can find affordable places, but in NYC you will have to look or ask about.
Speaking of tips, you should know that the doormen of hotels in New York City are extremely knowledgable. If you ask a question that results in them giving you a brief answer, no tip, but if you ask a question and the doorman spends some time answering it (such as looking up something in a book or map, hailing a taxi, or more) then you might consider tipping. The doormen are very helpful, and it's often worth asking them questions, even if one must tip.
