TV license

Do you need a TV license if you have a tv to watch videos on but no ariel (sp?) so you cannot watch TV on it?

This was tested some years back, if the tv is incapable of receiving broadcasts then you are OK. There was a case just like this where a chap claimed that he only watched video's and he won. The TV is then just a monitor. I'm sure someone willl scream at me if this has now changed!

I may be out of date with this answer but wasn't there a case similar to this where the house-owner had to therefore pay some monies twds a radio licence?? I am sure you have a radio in the house that is capable of receiving BBC.

I may be misguided here, so apologies if I am talking utter garbage.

they check a computer and see which properties havent paid for a licence, then they either write to u or come a knocking! I know this cos they wrote and then sent a bloke around to a commercial business my parents owned that never used a tv, and they said that they would have to fill out forms to show it shouldnt have a licence so they wouldnt keep hassling them!

isn't there now some loophole so that if you have internet access and can (in theory) watch tv on it you need a licence anyway? I've only been told this once so don't know how accurate this is.

This quote from the TV Licensing website.

"If you don't use any equipment to receive or record TV programmes, you do not need a licence. But we still need to hear from you. This is also the case if you use TV sets for closed circuit monitoring, as a computer monitor or watching pre-recorded videos only - for example, for training purposes.
You must let us know so that we can update our records to reflect your status. This will ensure that we do not continue to contact you unnecessarily.
We may need to confirm your situation by visiting your premises."

However if you are using equipment capable of receiving BBC broadcasts I do not know how much convincing they require that you will not use it for such.

As for Ward-Minter, you are indeed out of date. Radio Licenses were phased out in 1971.

Mycatis you must remember that without BBC you cannot watch Little Britain which will be a crime!!!!!!  So there.
