Only just found this site so may well be joining in as this is all new to me.

My late fathers family were Phillipsons from Carlisle. I have a copy of the 1911 census with the 4 children me grandparents had up tp that time but it doesn't include the family not yet born.

I know from memory my late Grandmother remarried at some time as her surname had changed to Mcnamee by the end of the war, although I have no idea when this happened,,,,,,or what happened to my Grandfather.

I must get down to some serious searching and hope you good people might be able to direct me when I get lost !!

I wonder is there anyone else out there searching the same family?

Strange you say that cos some of the second cousins on Facebook seem to have dropped and eye along the way.

The 1911 censos family spell it with two lls

can you ask your friend what district that marriage was in, or the year etc

I've tried searches for you for phillipson to McNamee, and macnamee with no returns, and also jane phillipson to unknown with nothing.

if you can give me the date or record number i can look at the actual record for you..that will reveal parents details inc maiden names, address etc

found what i believe isJane's death record

Jane Mcnamee nee Phillipson died 4th Dec 1957 Milton, Glasgow, at 21 mansion Street.
parents names given as Peter Williamson and Elizabeth Thoburn(? not sure on that spelling).
death was reported by son, George......(and I have found a George Daly Mcnamee born in 1917 in possilpark, same as Arrabella).

previous husband was Peter Phillipson, a private soldier.

from the death records I can find, this looks very likely to be your Jane, but the previous husbands name of Peter, not Joseph's thrown me.

I belive I have jane williamson on the 1891 and 1901 census'.
parents elizabeth and peter.
children..JANE, elizabeth and Mary Ann all born in carlisle

the 1901 census also shows a niece of peter's, lizzie boyle also there, possibly the daughter of peters sister elizabeth

You are spot on with Jane Mcnamee. My Grandmother did indeed live at 21 Mansion St, Possil Park, Glasgow. As a child her and I used to correspond regularly and that address is instilled in my mind. A large block of dingy grey tenements..I can still see her hanging out of the window wavin goodbye are our holiday with her,

What I don't get was the previous husbands name. My Father was Peter Phillipson and the 1911 census clearly names his father as Joseph Henry..as I think you have seen,

My Father Peter Phillipson was a Sergeant in the 2WW.

I had no idea there was a George but as I said earlier I remember Peggy who I feel sure real name was Margaret but that could be wrong..Arrabella I remember well [ she had the most awful Halitosis!!]

George,,,,my mind is whiring......I recal a cousin Alex.....could be short for Alexander. Was this his child?

I remember a sister who lived in another dingy grey building at Springburn Glasgow.

I started my family tree about 18months ago and have picked up a few tips to help with basic searches, and I know how great it is to find an unknown relative.

here's some more info for you:

i found 4 children with the surname McNamee born between 1917 and 1924....
1917 george daly mcnamee
1920 norman traynor mcnamee
1922 margaret mcnamee
1924 william edward mcnamee

Now, scottish tradition is/was to for the boys middle name to be the mothers maiden name (hence my grandfathers middle name of Sturrock which I alwys found unusual), so that helps with tracing previous generations.

I think the george and margaret above are reltions to you.

The name of peter on the death cert could be a simple error. When George reported it, he could have mistakenly given peter as the name....it would have been jane's fathers name rather than her husbands. Maybe he simply got confused between the 2, and she may not have mentioned Joseph too much for many reasons.

if you want to search the Scottish side, it will be quite easy for you. join scotsancestry - you can buy credits at around £6.95 a bunch.
after you search you can llok at results for 1 credit, and view actual documents for5 credits, so it's not too expensive. Once viewed, they stay in your account to see again for free. Becuae Scots records show parents names, addresses, and include maiden names they're really useful.
happy to look for more for you, but don't want to spoil it.

the death cert - I know dots put her e-mail addy on here, but it can be a bit risky, some not so kind people may bombard you with spam etc.

First.....I have taken up your offer and an email should now be in your inbox Munchi.

Next, as I suspected Margaret would be the Aunt known as Peggy. I know she was childless and emigrated to New York soon after the war.

There was also Arrabella as has already been mentioned.

I have been thinking about this most of the day and can now clearly see my Dad going off to Glasgow for her funeral. George is still a mystery to me but as he registered the death as the son he must be a son too.

To whoever said I wouldn't remember Albert...your right it appears he only lived to be 8 months.

Hi munchie well done indeed and you may well be right about the peter name. It often happened when people were confronted with questions at a time of grief in a strange and stuffy registrars office. Well done.

I have watch those TV programs where Celebs were helped to find their ancestors/ When they have stood at a grave and cried I thought.......why?? you never knew these people!!

I have to say I have already done that, and realise it is an emotional roller coaster.

DD I find genealogy fascinating and I hope you get a lot from it. Until the 1911 census came out I always thought my grandad born in 1901 was an only child as I never heard of any siblings......it was only recently that I found he had 5 sisters and 2 brothers, and am now in touch with one of his nieces who lives in Spain.

It is a most facinating subject craft. Being a bit of an "oldie" [at nearly 72] I want to leave as much information as I can for my own family should they ever become as curious as I am these days.
The internet opens up a whole new world for research.

Hi Geniology folks....since my last post so much has happened regarding my Ancestors.
I have to thank Google but the short story is I found a cousin who has not only sent me photo's of my relatives including my father, who he only knew it was Uncle Peter on the photo...but .....my father still has a sister [aunt Arrabella living in a nursing home in Alabama,,,,,magic. The daughter in law has been doing the McNamee family tree but was stumped on the Phillipson angle......I have been able to help her no end. In return I have information I don't think I would have had patience to discover ever.
My Grandmother was never married to the father of their children so I would never have got that information without good old Google.
The Alabama relative [adopted] also had photographs of my parents and myself!!
