They stay where they are - each browser is a separate program which uses its own folders to hold data.
And you can run any or all of them at the same time without any problems - my previous posting ^^^ was with Firefox and this one is with Opera (Firefox is still running).
Most browsers, Safari, Firefox etc., will import your bookmarks from the browser you are using now
This what Safari help says about importing the bookmarks from IE:

You can use the "Import and Export" option in Internet Explorer to export bookmarks and import them into Safari.

To export bookmarks from Internet Explorer:

Open Internet Explorer and choose File > "Import and Export."

In the Import/Export Wizard, click Next.

Select Export Favorites and click Next.

Select the Favorites folder, shown at the top of the folder hierarchy, and click Next.

If the option "Export to an Application" is available, click it and choose Safari. If it is dimmed, click "Export to a File or Address" to create a file containing your bookmarks. Later, you can import the file into Safari.

If you choose "Export to a File or Address," you can also choose a location and name for the file. The default name is "bookmark.htm," and the default location is the My Documents folder.

Click Finish to close the wizard.

If you exported your favorites to a file, open Safari, choose File > Import Bookmarks, and then select the favorites file you created and click Open. (If the File menu isn't visible, press the Alt key to show the menu bar.)

You dont have to "change" your browser.

You can have as many browsers installed as you like and use them all.
