It is rumoured, but if he does, I doubt it will be for more than one episode.

I read somewhere Sam Tyler is talked about and questions will be answered regarding what happened to him (he marries Annie Cartwright, lives for another seven years and dies in 1980 when his car crashes into a river while he is chasing someone but the body is never found) but he will not be appearing in the new series. We will have to wait and see. I'm really looking forward to this new series, pity it will be the last.
