What is the meaning of "got shellacked" in the following sentences?

 

The Judge had refused to campaign. He claimed he had too much work to do, and, more important, the people knew him well and if they wanted to reelect him then they would do so. His strategy had seemed arrogant to many. He carried Ford County but got shellacked in the other five.

'Shelacked' in this sense, means thoroughly beaten or thrashed. So, the Judge was elected in Ford County but his opponents beat him soundly in the other five counties.
Strictly speaking, to 'shelac(k)' means to coat with varnish, but it has been used as American slang since the 1930s to mean 'beat'.
