How do I get good compost?

My compost bin is going black and mushy. What is in there looks slimy and not at all the kind of thing I should be putting on the garden? Can anyone help?

You need to let air circulate - fork the contents over regularly or get a compost bin that can be turned. Also adding worms makes better compost - tiger worms from a fishing tackle shop are best.
