Most major museums recruit volunteers, with relevant information on their websites:

e.g. British Museum (London):
http://www.britishmus...in_in/volunteers.aspx

Natural History Museum (London)

Science Museum (London):

National Railway Museum (York):

Check the websites of any other major museums which might interest you.

Many local museums also welcome volunteers but you have to visit the museum (or phone them up) to find out about relevant opportunities.

Remember as well that heritage sites often use volunteers for themed events or for educational activities. Here are a couple of examples:

My husband is operations manager at a museum. They often have volunteers in to help man the desk and shop, and some of them get to take part in reconstructions as well. This particular museum also has an official friends' group which helps to raise money and awareness and hold special events and talks.

As Buenchico suggests, it's a good idea to approach the museum you're interested in.
