18 Answers
Hi everybody - well back to cant sleep really badly. I have finished my bout of sleeping pills and wont be getting any more for about 2 weeks. Can anybody recommend over the counter help. I have tried Kalms and other herbal remedies. I am full of anxiousness and depression and at the moment am crying because of this and lack of sleep.
My friend wants me to go away for a few days in May and already I am feeling worried about this in case I cannot cope being away - I am what my friend would say "Ten P with the mix-up". Please help!!!

I have had bereavements of two nephews one aged 15 and 33 and I worry for their parents. My sister lost the only child she had - I have been myself through trauma of two massive car accidents, have been shot many years ago, although bullet wound was only a flesh wound, then I lost my mum and dad whom I loved very much. Have broken my left arm twice and ankle two years ago. I know all you people have lost their parents but maybe am looking for excuses for this depression and sadness.
I suffered from lack of sleep and if it's never happened to you it's impossible to imagine how bad it is and the effect it has on your whole life.
After suffering for years I was diagnosed with depression, which considering how happy-go-lucky people thought I was took some getting used to.
Whenever I got ready for bed I used to start feeling anxious and on edge thinking I wouldn't sleep and dreading it.
I have been on a low dose of Mirtazapine for 3 years now and my sleep patterns have greatly improved. I take 1 tablet about an hour before I go to bed, but I can also take 1 during the day if I feel anxious then.
The right medication can make a huge difference.

Have you tried Jogging, im talking a good 4-5 mile day time jog or just whatever you can handle until you cant run anymore? you will soon start feeling tired as the night draws in and sleeping like a baby, plus the feel good endorphines will kick in aswell. sadly a lot of these sleep problems are because not enough of us exercise enough or can be bothered exercising and just want a quick easy fix!. i would say Running/jogging are the best exercises for making you tired at the right times.you wont get any better advice, try it before you knock it. As craft says, the proper sleeping tablets will help. But what you really need to do is deal with the CAUSE of the sadness and depression. If you don't, then you will never have trouble-free sleep. And unless you DO tell your doctor what is really troubling you, he will not be able to give you the help that you need.
I can only echo what craft and pasta and daresay a few others have said its anti depressants you need.
Ive been there -wasnt fundamentally obviously deprressed although there were lots of underlying issues but the anxiety and the insomnia were the killers,Depression manifests itself in different ways -its not the atypical down in the dumps cant get out of bed cant eat-theres lots of different manifestations.
Dont be proud -I have taken them and they helped me through a bleak episode years back and some like Prothiedon (I was on that after rakes of bum steers -im sensitive to medication) and it helps sleep and more it really helped me.
Good Luck and come back and let us know how you fare and in the interim before you see your GP try Nytol its the mutts nutts for a good sleep !! x

Bednobs and Chrissa are right go to your doctor immediately, when my wife had the same symptoms she went to see her doctor,he poopooed it,when she went to see another doctor 3 months later about an unrelated illness, she saw the depression in my wife.If the original doctor had done something about it she would have come out of it quicker, but it took her about 3 years to finally come out of it after taking tablets and counselling. The original doctor apologised profusely, but some of these old fogies dont know a thing about it.She still takes anti depressants now but boy its like having a new woman. With visiting with her to the sessions I saw it in a lot of people man, woman, old folk young ones,so dont be put off seeing the doctor.
You need to treat the cause rather than just the symptoms.
With something like this it might mean something to help the lack of sleep to get you into a better position to sort out your anxiousness and depression but make you you don't just rely on the tablets.
There are a lot of private therapists about you could look into.
Also some more relaxation based activities might help you learn to switch off and at least get more rest, things like meditation, qui gong (sp?), swimming...

Im so sorry to hear of these tragedies you have had to cope with Connemmara, its a tough time for you, I am mot sure how long ago all these events happened, but I dont think any amount of pills will help you in the long term, its all too easy these days for a GP to dish out various pills and potions - you may be feeling depressed and anxious but you are feeling like this for a reason, perhaps try some counselling ? How do you feel about taking medications for this though ? If that is your choice then please go with it, but you need to grieve and get through this, which takes time..please dont beat yourself up for feeling this way just be kind to you ...I agree with bednobs - pills are just a quick fix and merely masking the problem.
Are you not getting any support? I too have had lot to deal with cant sleep, eat, suffer bad headaches etc - currently on anti depresents and having support from crisis and community physc nurse and doctor and will be having counselling.
Please please seek some help sooner rather than later - let the professionals do the job their paid for!
Good luck with everything take care x

Have to say as an addendum that anti depressants in my opinion and experience gave me a 'break' from the symptoms the underlying issues were causing and therefore i was more able to deal with them.My personal philosophy helped and I came through it the other end and did see the light at the end of the tunnel.
I wish you well Connemara as I have read a few of your posts and you havent had your troubles to seek.Im sure you will come through this as you recognize you arent firing on all cylinders and crucially want to feel better. xx
