i am in suffolk i think he is early this year ,the swallows and house martins have arrived and are busy repairing last years nests

You're lucky. Living in the city it's the bl**dy blackbirds that start at 4am. I blame Paul McCartney. Harrumph!

PS. I do love the sound of swifts, it means summer has really arrived.

We're lucky to get a dawn chorus at all these days with the way songbirds are going. We never see a song thrush in the garden any more. (I can also think of a lot of sounds that would be worse first thing in the morning!)
