how do i run an installed programme

i am messing around on a site called hackr.org, i have been told to run a password cracker programme to break the password and more to the next level. once the programme is installed how do u get it to break the password????

You could be laying yourself wide open to all kinds of cyber attacks, viruses etc, i would be very careful

I've used this site. It's only a bit of fun.

I used John the Ripper (I think that's what it's called) and downloaded a dictionary. There are plenty out there. Then it's just a case of running the program with the passwd file and the dictionary.

yea, John the Ripper is what you're after.

Not sure what it says about you "hacking" skillz if you cant get it to work though.. ;)

Programs? There's only 1. John the Ripper. The other 2 files needed are the passwd file from the server and a dictionary text file (I tried brute forcing, left it over night and it didn't turn anything up in 24 hours... ran it with a dictionary and it brought up the password straight away..).
