CRB Check

My friend has just been promoted at work, he has been with his firm for over 30yrs but still needs to do this Criminal Records check. When he was 13, that's over 37 years ago, he unwittingly accepted some stolen toys that his mates had pinched, he went to court and he got a conditional discharge for receiving. He is now worried that this may pop up on his records. How far back do the CBR go. I told him that my answer bank mates would know.

Not that far.

Plus he was 13 at the time. Back then the age of responsibility was 16 I think.

biker had same; he 'received' as a teen. The CRB report was sent to biker at home address (I made a fotocopy) before he handed it to his new employer.

To amend ummmm's thinking - the age of criminal responsibility in England & Wales was raised in 1963 from age 8 to age 10, where it has since remained. It is still age 8 in Scotland although it is due to be raised to 12.

It is generally the case that the age of criminal responsibility reduces, not increases, as you go back in history (e.g. prior to 1933 it was age 7). If the age of criminal responsibility had been 16 it would not have been possible for a 13 year-old to be prosecuted in court as per the question.

Historically I knew that as when we were in primary school, a boy in my brothers class 2 years below me, killed a little girl and he was tried and sent to borstal. he was just 10 when he went away. My brother said he saw him when he was about 30 out shopping in town with his wife and little baby. (just an aside there) I have also done research into the quarter session records and found young children being tranported and even hung during the 1700s. (another aside). But certainly 37 years ago, when the only computers were in the hands of computer technicians (I saw my first computer in 1977 at the house of a bloke who went on to make millions in the industry) the police records were not put onto a database and since then I am sure only convicted criminals records have been added retrospectively, if at all.

I was a very bad lad many years ago, I have had a couple of CRBs done and they list nothing before 16 years of age and there were convictions going back earlier than that but not listed on CRB.
