Good morning all. Most will be off to a flying start with this puzzle, some nice clues. I have a 'leg hold' which only took a small matter of time, I "think" I've got the theme from 22ac (If I'm correct) it'll be familiar to some thematic grid solvers.

All the best.

I also groaned at the crossword's title!

On a pedantic note I think there were two hyphenated words not one as per the preamble.

Very enjoyable though.
Hi Kayakamina!

In my ( admittedly antiquated ) edition of the Oxford Book of English Verse ) three grid entries are shown as being hyphenated.
Hi novalis

You're up early.

I agree that the 'verse' shows 3 hyphenated grid entries but as the preamble recommended Chambers I took that to be the authority.
It doesn't matter though in terms of the final grid.
Cheers
DocHH - you have an invitation - that is if you can ever find your way to us. Most of my family are on the Isle of Man and Manx2 have just decided to cancel their route from there to East Midlands. East Midlands is our nearest airport, a mere two hours away by car, Birmingham and Manchester being next in line (3 hours or so). Don't even think of trains (thanks to dear Dr. Beeching), and National Express are almost non-existent. The few coaches there are only go from London and only go to Lincoln, Boston or Grantham, all at least 45 minutes away from us by car. What have I done!
On a happier note, I am feeling pleased with myself as I have completed the EV in odd five minutes's between bouts of packing. Have I peaked too soon. There is still 8 days to go and I am surrounded by packing cases and can find nothing. Let's hope the cat remains visible long enough to stuff him into a cage and onto a plane in due course.
Hello Christiana,
Looks like you,ve opted for the secluded lifestyle. Thanks for the invitation, let me know when, so I can attend on virtual basis, but with a real drink. Hope it all works out well.
Novalis and Kayakamina, my version of ODQ (7th edition) tallies with the rubric, 1 hyphenated, 2 of 2 words etc.
Christiana, glad to hear that the packing is going well - even if it is too well! The cat is bound to go missing between now and then.... we await the next chapter with interest.
Was up early because I'd woken up very early and there are two things ( well, a lot more than two ) which I can't do and they are go back to sleep once I wake up and lie in bed awake. It's amazing how the use of the hyphen is falling ( rapidly ) out of fashion. As Kayakamina rightly states it doesn't really matter. It was a fun puzzle. Just as an aside the late, great Magnus Magnusson fired a question at me quoting the apposite verse for this EV way back in 1980 and required the title of the poem. I did get it right. My father weaned me on the poet and his works.
Since we all seem to be done, can someone point out the significance of the title to me? I've read the thematic work, but nothing's jumping out at me. Is it some sort of Brit in-joke?

Jogler, I'm most impressed you've been to a Stanley Cup final game. When & where, can I ask? My hometown Chicago Blackhawks are in the finals this year and are up 3-2 on Philadelphia. As they have not won since 1961, I am excited.

I agree about the hyphen. When I started the Azed's I often stumbled about hyphen's. It can be one word or two hyphenated. Are they falling out of fashion?
Well, the surest way to have the answer strike is to hit the "submit" button. Double groan.
Dr b,
Over here Motor = Car,
and works = ????

Tweaker have you completed this EV?
Question Author
DocHH. Not yet. I feel foolish for starting the thread - the theme in what I thought was correct, but wasn't - I had a flying start, most anagrams sorted and (wrongly - the letters) placed into the grid.

I got rather far before being told I wasn't entering correctly! Any who, I put this to one side and carried on with the Listener, 7/10th's full, just need to resolve the clashes. I'll get the toughest out the way first then carry on the EV - which shouldn't take too long.

I guess you finished it? Silly to ask!
I was thinking that a more US title might be Autoparts
