Where would people stand?

A few days ago, the owners of a local fish and chip shops sold the place and moved out without telling its employers. They went in the next day to find they worked for a different family, luckily they were kept one, but where would they stand if the new owners didn't want them? Should they have been given notice?

The boss said goodnight see you all tomorrow and never came back. He had sold it to a plc healthplan dentist.
Luckily for them they were all safe initialy but I think that the new owners take them on under the old contracts then change them 'under consultation' in the normal way.

Yes, it would more than likely be covered by TUPE. You should be able to find more info on the ACAS site Molly...too knackered to explain myself but, in a nutshell, it's the law covering what happens to employees in the transfer of a business.
It's to protect them from all just being got rid of but there are circumstances in which people can be let go.
Also, at the end of the day, the law is all well and good but the other employment laws and practicalities of taking any action if anything was done wrong also need to be considered.
