Passport for Ireland?

Could anyone tell me if I have to have a passport to go to the Republic of Ireland? I remember years ago, going as a child we didn't need one but I have heard conflicting stories of now needing one. Thanks in anticipation

However airlines and ferry operators require you to carry ID. Ryanair will only accept a valid passport. Other airlines accept photographic driving licences. (Some will even accept things like bus passes. easyJet is such an example). Ferry operators' policies are in my posts here:
