Passport for Ireland?

Could anyone tell me if I have to have a passport to go to the Republic of Ireland? I remember years ago, going as a child we didn't need one but I have heard conflicting stories of now needing one. Thanks in anticipation

Not to enter Ireland but check what ID your airline needs if you are flying.

Probably do now. The last time I went you needed a passport with Ryanair but not with AirLingus....you'll need photo ID either way.

UK citizens do not require a passport to enter the Republic of Ireland.

However airlines and ferry operators require you to carry ID. Ryanair will only accept a valid passport. Other airlines accept photographic driving licences. (Some will even accept things like bus passes. easyJet is such an example). Ferry operators' policies are in my posts here:

Just been informed...it has to be a photo driving license or passport. Airlingus let him on with an out of date passport.
