Radio 2 anyone? Alcoholism

I'm in and out from the garden so I only caught the last bit, but from what i can gather a man who never drunk alcohol until he was 42 is now an alcoholic at 43. (correct me if I am wrong)
He rang radio 2 in tears.

Are some people just not designed to have any alcohol at all?
ie : i could go out today and drink a dozen pints easy , but not feel the need for a drink again.
I have a friend that does not drink, but when he does 2 pints and he loses the power of speech.

I'm not even sure what i am asking here but.................

Nobody hungry today? menu at food and drink!!

It does seem a little strange to become an alcoholic in such short a time. I did however have the radio on when that chap was talking - he did sound very genuine.

Drink affects us all differently. Some of us are lightweights, some can drink til we drop, and still carry on.

Not in the space of a year, no, I can't either. Surely true alcoholism takes years to develop?

Most alcoholics start by using drink as an anaesthetic to try and mask some problem in their lives. The addiction comes in time.

sandy in my twenties i would go out at least 4 nights a week and drink more than the recommended units for a week each night. so was i an alcoholic?
I don't think so, I went to work everyday played football twice a week was very happy.
I went out because I enjoyed going out and socialising not because i needed a drink.

I just wondered if this man who was on the radio had started drinking at say 18 would he have become an alcoholic...

Not all drinkers end up as alcoholics, and not all alcoholics end up living in a doss house and drinking Special Brew.
There was a report on the BBC news today which mentioned that as many as 10% of adult males in the UK may have a drink problem. It's possible to slip into alcoholism and still present the appearance of 'normality'.
