blue jays

have just spent half an hour watching a family of two adult and four young jays. the adults have been regular visitors to my bird table and this morning brought their family - brilliant - the resident pied wagtail couple also brought new family. Isn't that great!!

lucky you, we used to have bluejays locally but have gone, i wonder if its the parakeets that are scaring them off.

Are you in America then, Jaffa. A Blue jay is an American bird.

not american, english through and through.we used to see them at the local graveyard, parakeets are not english but have invaded surrey by the thousands

I have only ever seen 1 jay in my garden in the last 20 years here in york we dont seem to get them here.

But to make up for it I have a 2 resident greater spotted woodpecker's who are allways on my feeders. :-)

I am wrong - I shouldn't have called them blue jays - they are jays - senior citizen moment as we used to refer to them as blue jays when I was a child even though we knew it was wrong -

Jays are vey shy. I have heard them but not seen one for over 5 years until 2 weeks ago when I saw one on the feeders at The Loch of the Lowes when I went to see the Ospreys.

They are beautiful birds.

I usually see a couple of jays in my garden around April, brief visit then they're off. I'm quite jealous about you having a whole family, how wonderful, enjoy!! Hope they stay with you for a while.

Not all jays are shy.A jay visits my conservatory here in Cambridgeshire.It is totally unfazed by the dog, who lies by the open door of the drawing room and watches it from a couple of metres away. It must know that the dog is too bone idle to get up and chase it. It comes in because I put peanuts in there for other birds and the squirrels .Judging from the frequency of its visits, often every few minutes, it must still have young to feed. Jays have the habit of burying acorns, resulting in many an oak tree in England, so we may have peanuts sprouting in the garden come Spring!
