Actually the width of a standard washing machine (as well as dishwashers, tumble driers and ovens) is a nominal 600mm (60cm). They are usually about 59cm wide which enables them to be slotted into a standard 60cm kitchen unit housing.
Some manufacturers make slim “depth” (i.e. front to back measurements) machines of about 440mm (usual is about 550), but they are still 600mm wide. Miele, Bosch and Hotpoint are three that spring to mind.
For a slim width model I think you will be restricted to top loading machines. Hotpoint certainly do one of these, width 440mm. Because they are top loading they cannot be used under a kitchen worktop, but I believe they come on wheels so that they may be moved out easily to the centre of the room for use.
