I used to know someone who said the sun was over the yardarm at 11am every day. Wiki (here) suggests that he was actually correct! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yard_(sailing)

Boxy, when Big Sis and her hubby were on his sailing boat she would always say 'well, the sun is over the yardarm somewhere in the world'. Just 2 sheets to the wind you understand - it was only a modest clinker built boat
