Air con

My air con as stopped working on my 2001 mondeo, is there anything i can check myself before being at the mercy of the garage,

I had an Air Con problem with my A4 and got it repaired by a local Refrigeration specialist...a one man business and he didn't charge the earth. Check out Refrigeration Services in the Yellow Pages. No use me giving you this man's name unless you're in Northern Ireland.

Mine has packed up aswell, it still blows but only hot air - apparently there is a leak somewhere in the system as when it is re-gassed, it keeps escaping.

Nope

Get a recharge and a leak-check from a specialist.
Most have a "sniffer" tool to find leaks.

we had that problem & when they looked at re gassing, we were told we would need a complete new unit... not worth it £900 at the time, besides the best air conditioning open the windows..... lol

In my experience they seem to need topping up every summer.
Unimpressed by that.

depends how much you use it old_geezer the car we have now hasnt been filled since we got it near 2yrs ago

My car is six and a half years old and has never been re-gassed.

It's not quite as cold as it used to be, but as a result doesn't suffer that awful pong any more.
