Do these people live in the real world?
The idea in it's self is good, but I am afraid it will not get the response needed.
Instead of attracting a cross section of youngsters, ie class, ethnicity, etc, It will only attract the type of person that now attends Scouts, Guides, Boy's Brigade etc.at a cost of up to £1,400 each,it would be better to send them all away on a package holiday.
Cameron's original idea of making it compulsory was a much better idea, take the decision out of the child's hands, it's all a matter of discipline.

Are you really suggesting, McMouse, that the Armed Forces should have their limited resources diverted to accommodate the training of some 600,000 “recruits” every year?
What are they to do with them? Where will they be accommodated? Where will the resources come from to train and supervise them? The questions are endless. Compulsory National Service ended almost fifty years ago and there is no way on this earth that the UK could or would reintroduce it.
Mr Cameron’s proposal is equally preposterous. As has been said, it will be of interest to only a small minority of youngsters and their parents probably already see to it that they have access to any similar facilities that they wish.
Like many schemes and actions the government announces, in a week or two’s time it will be quietly shelved.

Hang on before most of you dismiss this idea, is it all bad?
We now have vast amounts of children of all classes and races finishing school at the age of sixteen, finishing what they have been used to doing for eleven years, and that is getting up early in the morning and then travelling to a building where they are grouped together and under close supervision made to carry out various tasks.
There was no discussion at that early age of five, do you want to volunteer to go to school or not? This has worked fine for many, many, years.
So why not now extend this idea to make it compulsory from the age of sixteen to eighteen, to attend a centre, where they are taught adult skills, plumbing, electrical & electronic work, building skills and car mechanics. We have enough retired tradesmen that would be interested in using some of their spare time as instructors.
For all those that don't go on to further education, collage and uni, it would be an ideal foundation to help to build a section of youngsters that would otherwise be kicking their heels (or something else) on the streets.
