I do the Telegraph cryptic everyday and a friend has asked me this one - its not from todays Guardian but not sure which one.

he thinks the 2nd letter is a d but i cant think of anything so he may be wrong, no other letters im afraid.

HOUND ? this page http://wordage.info/hound/ includes shoot as a synonym for hound but I'm not sure in what sense

p.s. I didn't see that is was only 5 letters because I'm wearing contact lenses for the first time for well over 25 years and struggling to read the screen at the moment.

Looks like HOUND is spot on.
I did search to see if it was synonym of shoot but couldn't see anything, so well-spotted- I will check it out.
Good luck with the lenses. I've worn mine 16 hours a day for 30 years (they have been updated of course) and I'd hate to have been without them

the 2 downsides so far (apart from reading at close range being a problem currently) are that it makes me aware of how short i am because the ground seems so much closer than with glasses, and without the usual darkened spectacles i am going to have to try to refrain from taking surreptitious glances at people when i walk past them in the street
