This answer has been challenged previously though- I recall it was argued that the word that fits the clue (but not the letters) is LUPULIN and that LUPULINE means something else.

Lupuline is given as an alternative spelling for Lupulin in Chambers - also Lupulinic.

My Chambers is 2003 and perhaps feeling its age, but it gives no alternative spelling for Lupulin and only lists Lupuline and Lupulinic as adjectives.
