being a uni student and quite savy with peoples sexual tendencies
i thought i browse thru these pages and so far going back to page 8 i have not seen one question relating to gay or bi- sexual partners
i wonder if they are being weeded out by AB ??
i do know many women have there husbands cheating on them meeting up with other guys for shall we say "relief"

Didn't go to University to learn about Polytechnic, knew before hand that if you failed to go to Uni for whatever reason, you went to Polys. Now under New Labour, most of the Polys are Universities.

Is that about right?

I was quite good friends with the president of the Gay and Lesbian Society at Hatfield Polytechnic when I was there.

One of the reasons I went there was the opportunity to study a combined degree of physics and astronomy at undergratuate level which was not easy elsewhere.

I turned down a place to do theoretical physics at London to do so ( there is a big difference between the London colleges isn't there Squad?)

Hatfield also did excellent aeronautical engineering and computing courses.

The draw back that still exists is you really have to be well informed about the subject and the University to know it's value.

There's a big difference in subjects throughout the system.

Were you a mature student flip-flop? - I always imagined you were older than me from reading what you write!

So Squad basically all you know about Polys was from snobby gossip then?

Polytechnics ran courses for Lower qualifications such as HNDs which is probably where you get that idea from

But many awarded degrees were awarded and those were under the Council for National Academic Awards which ensured a high and uniform standard across all the institutions.

I must say though it never ceases to amaze me the number of people who never let their ignorance of a subject be a bar to holding an opinion.

The improvement in the number of people going to a University or Poly. is a credit to the improved educational system installed by New Labour.

Blimey Jake, do I really come across as that old? Granted I feel pretty old nowadays, particulary following the Easter weekend having played two games of (vets) rugby - my legs are still aching like a sod.

One day every student will leave skool with 3-4 grade A's and gain a First at university. This will be irrespective of intellectual skills. However, it will ensure that they all become Managers in something or other. Degrees from Oxbridge, London, Manchester, Southampton, will be exposed for the socially divisive disgrace they are. Allocation of places at all universities will be on the basis of enforced equality, with special places reserved for children of one-parent families, ethnic minorities, ect. Today a street thug, tomorrow a Professor of Mathematics, innit.

Hi Jack when I was at Uni a year ago I had quite a few 'flings' with girls. My boyfriend knows that I am Bi and he most certainly uses it to his if you know what I mean :-)

Bath used to be a poly, now it is ranked in top five in the country for physics research. It is not students' fault that so many go to uni. It is employers who now require a degree for pretty much any job regardless of the relevance of the degree or the skills required by the job. Any degree and any course can be equally rigorous or intellectual if committed to, the only difference I can see between courses is the minimum work and effort required to pass through.
You can go on to a phd and academic research from any course anywhere if you work hard at it. primarily because your reference from tutors will demonstrate your commitment and an interview will show your intelligence beyond blinkered assumptions about where you got your degree. But some courses allow students to slack off and not work very hard while others will just kick you out, the work a student does is down to them so what matters is not where you go but who you are.
I honestly don't think Cambridge has that much of a better course but gets the choice to take better people because of their reputation because of their age, so they put better people out.

i have read this thread with interest and have now found out what a university education can do for you. thank the lord high chancellor for old fashioned polys which i went to over 30 yrs ago as my parents couldnt afford a university place. the gay scene then whilst not as open as it is now was still flourishing , and i would have given my right arm to have met bi females, but from memory all of the women tended to look like susan from britains got talent. (humble apologies if i have upset just about every minority with these remarks, no harm intended.
