Perhaps I'm being obtuse. I was aware of
Earl Hines (which is why I suggested it as an answer),
but I can't see how it fits the (cryptic) clue.

Hines can't be right as the clue stipulates a first name. Miles makes sense, as in the expression 'by miles' (very much). However I don't really know anything about jazz.
