I have never watched csi 2sp, if this happened on an episode maybe this is where the lady in question got this fatal idea.

I heard a similar story in Spain, after being burgled while away from their property, the occupants discovered that someone was coming down the chimney so they had a steel grate inserted from the bottom to prevent access, on returning to their property after a holiday they discovered a horrible smell, a young boy had climbed down the chimney but couldn't get out at the bottom because of the steel grate and couldn't climb back up the chimney, he had been steeling their property busing this method.8

She was also a doctor, i was about to say that she should've had more sense to climb into an ex's chimney as this sounds like some serious stalker bunny boiler type then i read what her ex said about her. "She had her issues, she had her demons, but I never lost my respect for her"
So maybe she was suffering from some psychological problems.
