CPU / PSU Fans

Following on from my posting below

If the PSU fan or the CPU fan is not working - would directing a room fan at the processor so that air is going into the casing through the holes ; serve as a temporary measure while I get replacements ?

no... go to maplins or pc world ....fans from £6.00

No not at all. Switch off the computer or you will damage it.

It won't work.

If the CPU fan is gone, it might be OK to open the case and direct a powerful fan at the CPU - however, this approach could compromise cooling elsewhere, so do not try it unless you know exactly what you're doing.

The Power Supply Unit, PSU, comes as one unit with an integral fan. Although it might look as if the fan is replaceable, and it is physically possible to so so, do not attempt it - it could cost you your life - as I said before, PSUs have lethal voltages inside, even after they're switched off.

I would help if you posted the exact make and model of your PC - power supplies come in different capacities.

ive changed the power fan in a few computers no bother after they've been stood overnight and an earth lead is attached somewhere

You were lucky.
To work on a PSU safely, that's not sufficient. It's necessary to safely discharge and then ground the capacitors that hold the lethal charge.
People who have to do this for a living are properly trained and work in a special environment with isolation transformers and special earthing arrangements.
That's why they're difficult to open and carry warning stickers telling you not to open the case.
Why risk your life for the sake of a few quid?

i think a lot of people might think its good advice, i think a bit over cautious i remove the power supply unit rest it with wires attached on top of the comp remove the case and remove the 4 screws lift out the fan and if the wires to the fan are not unplug able it cut the cable and re-attach with a simple connector ,reverse the procedure ,job done

I'm going home now to check to see if the CPU fan is working or not

I know that the PSU fan is not working .
If it turns out that the CPU fan is wroking and it is only the PSU fan that is not working - would my idea of the external fan suffice temporarily .

I'm been harrased by little Miss Wooster , who needs to do some homework on it urgently and I wont be able to get around to having it fixed before the weekend , hence my further question

BW - how about letting us know the make/model of the PC?

you working with small capacitors here vagrant if you have a very bad heart you may if your very unlucky die if you get a belt,
were not working on commercial microwave ovens here or Manchester airports radar system
