Why is a slice of bread called a round when it is not nessecarily round.

Yes, I did. It actuallys stems from the French word "tranche", meaning slice, which seems to bring us neatly back to the OP.

I have never heard of a slice of bread being called a round....a round of sandwiches or toast yes....I always assumed that the word round was like a round of drinks and meant a serving or portion

Thinking about it, woofgang is spot on. Round of toast, sandwiches, yes, but not bread. On the other hand, of course, without a round of bread we wouldn't have had this thread and such a laugh.

Thankyou, anne. No snow yet. I remember 'round' being used in relation to bread in the '50s. I don't think the later generations use it much.

I think that there are many great imaginations on this site. That's why I stayed with it after just asking a simple question years ago. It's a great site.

You don't think something can be vaguely-shaped, Mike? And you supposedly a linguist! Had the bottom of the loaf referred to been rounded rather than flat, it would of course actually have BEEN elliptical. Given that it wasn't, I felt perfectly entitled to describe it as vaguely so. MY Master's degree is in English.

PS I found YOUR chuntering throughout this thread vastly more tiresome than MY succinct and informative answers.
