Ah. Unfortunately it was the way things were in the nineteen-twenties and thirties. It happened to someone we know well, the baby was sent away and the unwed mother just had to pick up her life again as if nothing had happened. Yes the grandparents knew there was a baby but it was not to be spoken about.

It sounds as if TWR is caring for an elderly person who was abandoned at birth (or sent away) because he was born out of wedlock (as happened then), and he knows nothing of his birth mother but TWR has found out where she is buried. Families in those days often lived with shedloads of secrecy and guilt which they couldn't let out, they felt it too "shameful" - the complete opposite from how some things are these days. It's extremely sad, TWR, but your gentlemen is far from the only one, I imagine, in this sad situation.
