darkened windows

I recently bought a car from a friend which has darkened windows to the side, both back and rear. He had them done at the showrooms when he bought the car from new. Now the law has changed in regard to the front side windows - am I in danger of being penalised. I've heard of cases where the police can actually confiscate the car if stopped and checked on the road?
