Hip Replacement

Has anyone had a hip replacement that required the socket to have a bone graft?

No I haven't, but what an interesting question.

I know of an arthrodesis of the hip ..where the head of the femur is fused into the pelvis socket.
Bone is sometimes used in this instance ....... the head of the femur would be
'scuffed up', along with the socket in the pelvis. The two would then be put back together with a couple of pins fusing the joint ..!

alavahalf....this is quite different and is not an arthrodesis it is a bone graft to build up the acetabulum (acetabuloplasty) before inserting the femoral head prosthesis.

I just wondered what the poster was getting at?

A friend of mine recently had a hip replacement but was told that it was not the straight forward op. They were told that the socket had worn away so much that it had to be built up with a bone graft. Was wondering how much longer the healing process was than the normal?

moter....there is no perfect answer to your question, except to say that the recovery period will be much longer than a routine hip arthroplasty, because of the added consequence of the acetabuloplasty (bone graft)

The operation takes longer, there is more bleeding and the recovery time and weight bearing time, is all prolonged.
