convert mpeg to avi files

most of my phone videos are mpeg4 which i can watch with no problem with quick time player.
but i wanted to do a compilation video (cutting bits out of some videos etc) and i tried to use windows movie maker, but it doesnt support the file type.
i downloaded a converter but when they played back they had a banner through them!
i know i have converted them before, does anyone have any name for a free converter i could use or even another application to edit them in the format they are in?

For converting files, Google for "Format Factory" and for editing videos Google for "Avidemux". Both FREE programs and very good. Use them all the time.
