What is the difference between a Lap top and a note book

Absolutely nothing.
There is a difference between a laptop/notebook and netbook though.

A laptop is a fully functioning pc, where mobility is not the major consideration. It may have a very large screen, be heavy and have a short battery life. A desktop replacement.

A netbook is much smaller, lighter, with a long battery life. It does not have a cd/dvd drive and is not normally as powerful as a laptop.

So if I wanted to replace my home PC a Laptop would be just as good for photos and video?

Yes it would, but as always check the spec before you buy. If it's going to be a replacement desktop and not moved much you may as well go for the biggest screen you can afford.

There are specialist laptops on the market aimed at high end gamers who need very powerful machines. If that's not you, minimum 2gb RAM and a good processor will do very well.

Look for Windows 7 Home Premium, rather than Basic.

Invest in a good computer magazine, read the reviews then have a look at them in the shops before you decide which one suits you best.

There is no Windows 7 Home Basic released in the UK.

It has only been released in emerging markets (eg poor countries)
