To my mind, these were the gold-standard by which other adverts could be judged. They were witty, memorable and inclined me toward the product ++.

Can't today's advertising agencies emulate their success ?

They were brilliant. The ads today seem to be very `in yer face`. I liked the Hamlet ones with the guy who played Rab C Nesbit with the comb-over.
Superb adverts ... I actually don't remember this one, but it's still funny.

They were superb, but I never wanted to smoke a cigar as a result.
The 'Carlos Fandango' wheels on the Anglia... Panama cigar advert was priceless.
There were a couple of Castello cigar adverts with Russ Abbott which were funny as well.

Its ironic that a lot of the best adverts over the years have been for alcohol or tobbaco related products!
Some of the recent ones have been brilliant. The Skoda car made out of cake springs to mind. It may not have been amusing but it was certainly edible.
