I had a really heavy chesty cold which was at its worst a week past Friday and the worst of the symptoms lasted a week. The cough was a dry one which was worse at night so I couldnt sleep.Think I possibly had Laryngitis.
The cough is now productive but just feel its going on a bit long-or is it?
How long before I would need to go to my GP or is this a normal timescale?
Anyone any clue?
Thank you.

It's awful isn't it?

I had one a few months back...lasted about 2 weeks in all. Like you it started off dry...when it did become productive it was clear so I presumed it wasn't anything to worry about and it was a matter of grinning and baring it.

Gets you down though.
Depends........productive you say!.......any colour....green or yellow or colourless?

Have you got muscle aches yet? I felt like I'd done 1000's of sit ups....

I have got a dry cough - worse at night. I keep waking up coughing for the past couple of nights. At work I cough until my eyes water which is awful. I meant to go out and get some cough medicine. Does anyone know a good one?

pix-I knew it had to someone elses fault its you-for making me laugh until I cant breathe for coughing :) xxx
grasscarp I was being force fed Benylin -then Covonia by my husband the first wee ekdn as his tonque was bleeding with having to bite it (due to wanting to tell me to shut up cos he couldnt sleep:))
Think the Covonia helped to 'break' it but really all it does I suspect is soothe it for 10 mins I think.Hope youre better soon-its rotten :(
Thanks Dris. I will hit the chemists on the way home. I dont want this to last much longer as flying to Chicago on Saturday and there is nothing worse than taking a cold on a flight.

O no -thats where you generally get them as well :(
I got mine coming back from Dusseldorf -well to be fair i was just recovering when i went but when i came back i got it double worse within a week:(
Safe trip :)
Codeine linctus if the chemist will sell it to you or Pholcodine if they won't are pretty darned good for coughs.
(Codeine linctus is a favourite with junkies, so some chemists are very wary of selling it.)
Both of them tend to make you sleepy, though. :-((
Hope you all feel better soon.
It wasn't the cough that carried Dris off
Twas the coffin they carried her off in :-)
A wee glass of warm Buckie will have you as right as rain.

Sandy -lol -ive never tried Buckie in my life-more a west coat tipple althougn ive seen a few bottles lying about here and once in Tescos my delighful daughter exclaimed -Buckie hasnae half went up in price -I could have dunted the back of her knees for that !!!
Dris, we swear by Beechams All In One - tastes foul but seems to hit the right spot.
My late brother-in -law told me that one standard paracetamol caplet would stop most coughs.
It's always worked for me (so far).
