The first reply above can be taken as correct, but only in the strictly figurative sense of the phrase. Given the purely symbolic nature of the phrase, howver, it is difficult to be absolutely correct. The wall never actually did fall, neither was it pushed over. It was graudally demolished over the few years subsequent to the events of November 1989. Bear in mind that there is still at least one short stretch of the wall still standing in Berlin (I was there a few weeks back)..Also, as a result of the real or perceived shortcomings of German reunification, it is still common to hear/read the equally symbolic/figurative phrase "Mauer in den K�pfen" ([Berlin} wall in people's minds)
