Is there any reason you cannot have both an asymetric tyre and a directional tyre on the same axle?

Well, I wouldn't fancy it. Poor/unpredictable handling, possible pulling to one side or the other, possible disruption of the logic of a TCS or ABS.

It's not recommended .. minor handling effect.
In practice, you would not notice it tho.

well I was curious but the guy in Tyre land was adamant it would make no difference, I tend to believe him because he could easily have used this as a reason to sell me 2 tyres instead of 1

I have had a similar mix on my Skyline .. they were 265/40's and could not tell any difference even when chucking it about.
