It is sold at most garden centres under different names 'Roundup' 'Tumbleweed'. Just look for glyphosate in the active ingredients. This herbicide best used when plants actively growing but it should work at this time of the year if there are growing leaves present. Just spray or paint on to leaves and wait probably 14 days and shoots will die off. Being systemic it will translocate into the roots and kill them. With horse chestnut which is an early species into autumn decline it might not be so effective so you may have to attacck them again in spring. Other option is to cut shoots at ground level and paint same herbicide straight onto cut surface. BEWARE this herbicide will kill grass and other plants so don't spray on a windy day and protect grass. As far as herbicides go it is 'safe' one to use with pets children around - just follow the instructions. Only other option is to dig up main roots across lawn.
Don't know if it's available commercially but we use a chemical called Garlon and mix it 75 garlon:25 Diesel (out of the garage type of diesel). It depends on the size of the tree. You could use glyphosate but if you do, use it neat. Drill lots of holes as far into the top of the stump as you can then pour neat roundup (glyphosate) into the holes. You'll be better off doing this in May as the sap's rising. This will make sure the tree stump is dead. HTH |
