Can anyone help me identify the bird that I saw in my back-garden just a few minutes ago?

It was roughly the size and shape or something like a slightly small crow or seagull, but like a sandy brown coloured body, with a dark beak (I think) Also, it had a very distinctive, shiny, blue square on it's wings, like some ducks.

Any ideas?

Yes thanks that's it. I thought I knew it . . .

And you won't believe it, but I've just seen another bird. This one was smaller, about the size of something like a robbin, but mainly grey, but looked like it had really thick, maroon red eye-liner! what the heck was it?
pmsl ... Imagine us lot all rocking up at Molly's for xmas armed with our cameras.
Did it have a flash of yellow on the wings?

Hi Mollykins......I think the second bird which you want identified was, as suggested by ethandron and Naz. a Goldfinch.

Feel sure you will agree that it's a great photograph taken by Naz.

Best wishes...Ron.
