I wondered because you can play a DVD on a Blu Ray player. I meant to test this out earlier but I forgot (and the DVD player and x box are in my son's room and he's asleep).

This is a format very different to DVD, and DVD players are not forward compatible. BD Players backward compatible though, to enable them to play any DVD.
If you want to view Blu Ray sherrardk, then you have to have a Blu Ray player. I found this out when I was thinking of buying Blu Ray discs from Amazon so I asked around the shops.
To be fair, with the weather and the children being off school, I got him to buy it for himself so I have no idea what it cost (but expect that it cost more than the one I would have bought for him).
If you buy a Blu-Ray player I'm sorry to tell you this but you will need to update your tv to an H/D ready machine ( a blue ray player comes equipped with HDMi socket NOT Scart so you would be unable to connect Blu Ray to a standard tv.
