Elton John and his partner have become parents, with the birth (by a surrogate mother) of a baby boy.

Last year in the Ukraine, they were turned down from adopting because the Ukraine did not accept civil partnerships and also because of his age, he was then quoted as saying :

/// "David always wanted to adopt a child and I always said no because I am 62 and I think because of the travelling I do and the life I have, maybe it wouldn't be fair for the child" ///.

So what's changed?

eyethenkyew: is your post sarchastic? I don't mean that rudely, I honestly can't tell.

Sammo:

"50yrs ago 2 queers having a kid would have been unheard of.. but now its OK.. So who said its OK?"

Firstly, why do you have to use such insulting language? You must be completely aware that 'queer' is considered a derogatory term nowadays.

Secondly - society did. As an intelligent, self-aware beings, humans have created something called society. Society (like humanity) has its ugly side, but humans have also created something else - reason - to help us improve it. As beings who have discovered reason, it's our responsibility to assess our society and question it at every opportunity. At some point in the C20, we reasoned that two men in a partnership is of no real consequence to anyone else. Later, various studies (as I understand it) indicated that same-sex parents aren't much better or worse than heterosexual ones (much in the same way that single parents aren't). As this thread demonstrates, the debate over whether this means same-sex parents should be able to raise families or not is still ongoing.

You seem fairly surprised that suddenly people are questioning the values society holds on this. This is nothing new and is entirely healthy for reasons I have outlined. If you have failed to keep aware of how society examines itself, that's your own fault.

Well when I set this question I didn't realise it would have been so popular, that says a lot about my critics, who constantly accuse me of asking the same questions, questions of no importance, questions of no interest, filling up my own questions with numerous own answers etc etc.

This matter of Elton John was the subject of a late night radio phone-in.

The presenter was obviously 'pro-gay parenting', anyone who phoned in with their doubts and concerns against gays being parents, were rudely called bigots, homophobic and cretins. These attacks were against perfectly polite callers who had called in to give their particular point of view.

Why is it that one is not allowed to have an opposite opinion on matters such as this, without the need for insults being levied against their person?

The presenter kept referring to the fact that there were hundreds of children waiting to be adopted, what he didn't seem to consider was the fact that Elton John and his partner were using their wealth to buy another human being, this is the frightening part of this whole affair.

If they must have a child they could afford to take a number out for adoption.
What about all the parents that had children before they 'came out'? Does it suddenly make them not so good parents?

ummmm

/// What about all the parents that had children before they 'came out'? Does it suddenly make them not so good parents? ///

What like leaving Mum to go and live with a man?

Yes I think you could say that.
so AOG you would pefer they lived a lie than were true to themselves and their family?
This question was supposed to be about age.
Well my Mum left my Dad...they still managed to be good parents.
Yes - too old. What is the answer to the child's question. Where's/who's my mummy? Love is good. Let's hope all the love in the world is enough.
"what he didn't seem to consider was the fact that Elton John and his partner were using their wealth to buy another human being, this is the frightening part of this whole affair"

AOG - you do not have to be rich to have a surrogate baby.

You have to be rich to afford IVF treatment.

And what do you mean by 'buy'???
Has anyone checked to see if the surrogate mother will be living in their household? If so there will be a ready made mother figure for the child as well as two fathers. I think that would be great, unless they start quarrelling about the baby's upbringing.
Look lets be reasonable about this "2 men cannot have a baby" we now want to rewrite the rules of nature because it suits us, its wrong and I think we demean ourselves by accepting it !!
......."reasonable" ?!!
Barney - you're wrong. Two men 'can' have a baby.
Not without a womb they can`t and men ain`t got one....
Two men cannot have a baby, but they can certainly raise one.
