We've been to Varadero as well -best holiday ever.Voted one of the top ten beaches in the world-stunning.We hired a Taxi (lovely Merc) for our trip to Havana -has to be seen an experienced to be believed its everything and more -well worth just that little bit extra for your own personal guide.There will be a lot of Canadians there -its just their equivelent of going to Majorca or such like and they were good craic.Sooooo jealous but cant go back as I wouldnt want the first time to be spoiled as it was so perfect.
Hi Dris
How much did your trip to Havana cost, and was it a one day or overnight stay. We were in moon palace mexico last year for our wedding and the Maldives in October for our wedding anniversary. We just think Varadero looks so fantastic and great value for money. We are a couple in our 40s and our children are 22&18 so they wont be going with us! Is safety an issue after the honeymoon couple from where I live N ireland, the bride was killed on the 1st day in Mauritius, so so sad. Cheers for all the help and replies....B x

We were there in 2004 so it was the equivelent of £100 for the day but we shared with another couple.Early start and as it happens we went on Revolution Day of all days where there was 1m people in Havana for Castros speech.Took about 3hrs but the guide took us to the cigar factory first and from there we were able to see all the people marching through the City -it was awesome.By the time we got into Havana they were leaving but it just added to it -he had his own little bars he took us to -we wouldnt have found them-then the pub EH used -then Goverment buildings then Revolution Sq and we were the only ones there apart from another couple and we had the obligatory iconic pic taken with Che in the background -so yes well worth the money !! A memory i'll treasure.We had no problems with safety at all -its well policed as tourism is their economy.You have to go into the town to the open air bars -great music and the young Cubans salsaing outside the bars -just tremendous.Fabulous people-you'll have time of your life its unique !!
This is where we stayed;

Yes I've been. The beaches at Varadero are wonderful. Hotels are great but the town itself is pretty non-descript. I loved Havana (we were there 3 nights). We used to go and seek out the pensions to eat in. They are basically privately run restaurants set up in peoples homes. Have you got a lonely Planet? There's lots of really useful information on the best places to eat/drink in there.
