Did they play on a Wednesday when they first started?
their day off
The club was initially a cricket club named The Wednesday Cricket Club after the day of the week on which they played their matches.

The reason the games were played on a Wednesday was due to the team being formed by local butchers who had a half day finishing on a Wednesday.

Probably not the place to post it, but this reminded me of a great Tim Vine gag:

"A bloke called me asking about my availability for a coaching job in Sheffield. I told him I couldn't manage Wednesday."
and they have never stopped since in butchering football!
ive been to hillsborough on a few occasions..the first when stoke played west ham in the league cup semi final replay in 1972...i was 12 and my overidding memory is that how very crowded it was and that we were being crushed [we were in the leppings lane end]....and then of course there was the hillsborough disaster some years later...it just seemes weird that my most vivid memory of that night was of being crushed as we left the ground....
My understanding is, when they formed they played on someone's ground. (Can't remember who's) They were only allowed to play on a Wednesday because other games were being played on the other days. They chose the word Wednesday to distinguish them from Sheffield United.
