The liberty bodice. As a child I wore a vest and on top of that a liberty bodice. It had rubber buttons and was meant to keep your back warm. No central heating in those days, well not in our house. I am only 61, but I remember ice on the inside windows. Do you?

I wore a liberty bodice with rubber buttons and suspenders attached and thick brown stockings (and a vest) at about 7 or 8 years ofn age. So cold winters, got dressed in bed and undressed in front of the only coal fire in living room (not lounge in those days) ice on inside of windows. I also had a stone hot water bottle that was an old beer bottle. We did have a bathroom (posh eh) but in the living room we had an understairs cupboard that was used to store coal. This was from 1945 to about 1950 when dad built an outside store for coal. But can you imagine the mess that the coalmen made walki8ng through the house and depositing the contents of coal sacks in a cupboard off the livingf room
Yes I wore them too and also had the stone hotwater bottle, but we had a 15 bedroomed house on 3 floors (there were 7 kids then 2 adopted and mum and dad) so necessary really, with 3 bathrooms (one of each storey) but the place was freezing. We had an ideal stove in the living room, nothing in huge dining room and a small cast iron fire in the Lounge. Had to dry hair sitting in front of the fire, took forever.
