No - they are actually more expensive than some as they charge booking fees, etc, which most don't. They may show you the cheapest ticket as a default - most sites list the fastest journey as the default, but can be manipulated into showing other fares.

ALL the rail booking sites should sell exactly the same tickets at exactly the same price. The only exception is with a few train companies which give you a discount for travelling on their own trains on some ticket types..

No, I find if you go to your local ticket office, and get them there in person about 6 weeks or more in advance then that is the very cheapest way. Obviously you do not always have all that time, but that is the best place to get them.

dzug's answer is pretty sound with the proviso that you buy as far in advance as possible to get the lowest fare.

hello again, i´m having a hell of a problem trying to get a particular route. I want to go from Gatwick airport to Birmingham new st, direct, but all i can find are trains going via euston. any help would be appreciated.

There aren't any trains going direct from Gatwick Airport to Birmingham New Street, so you won't find any (there were a few a day until late 2009 but they have been withdrawn.

If you don't want the Euston route you can travel via Guildford and Reading with one change or via Kensington Olympia and Milton Keynes with two changes. Specify Guildford or Kensington Olympia as a via option.

thanx dzug2, i was wondering why i couldnt find that route, as i´ve used it loads of times in the past. bad news, as i´ve booked the frigging flights now, and was banking on that train, cuz my g´friend hates using the underground.

You could use the 73 bus between Victoria and Euston - you need to allow a bit longer than the tube but it's easy enough

i like the look of the reading, guilford route, but how can i book this through the internet?

Well on the FGW site you would go into advanced search and specify go via Gulidford. (You could just put Reading instead but you might get services via Clapham Junction and Reading which are best avoided if there is an alternative)

Other sites have something similar but I'm not as familiar with them.
