Can you still have bridesmaids at registry office weddings?

I'm not sure why they're getting married at a registry office, the bride (not sure about groom) has been married before, but I would have thought they'd have enough money to find a church/cathedral in London or some castle somewhere scenic to get married in.

Plus neither have children, and I'm the closest young female on the brides side, plus the groom has a sister but we're not sure how old she is (probably at least 30) or if there would be anyone else suitable. But they're quite posh and will probably be going for a big posh wedding. I'm not getting my hopes up, but do you think they'll ask me, that is, if you can have bridesmaids at registry office weddings?

We got married in a registry office as neither of us has any religious beliefs. We had all the normal things - bridesmaids, best man etc and my dad walked me down the aisle to our selection of music. all the usual trimmings. Registry office suite we used was in an Italian Renaisance style. It was lovely.
and on a historical note, pay attention at the back mollie, register office weddings were first intriduced in 1837 and they gave the multitude of widowed and abandoned women the chance to marry in law without the stigma of the walk of shame showing they had been seduced and ruined, i kid you not,

Yikes dotty, and FYI I rarely sit at the back of a classroom, I do for chemistry but there's only two rows of seat and we all sit towards the middle. I believe that.

Annie, that sounds beautiful and romantic. Were your outfits in thats style aswell?
It was lovely Molly - we are Scottish so the guys were all in kilts and my dress was very plain - ivory A line and ballerina length with a simple hair band, my other half is dark almost mediteranean looks and I have fair skin but dark hair which was in a very short graduated bob. The bridesmades wore fairly plain dresses of heather coloured silk. I just googled to see if I could get any photos of the interior of the building and just found out that it was bought in 2008 with plans to turn it into a hotel. Absolute shame - very historic and listed building.
annie,,,,,,,,,,,,oh lovely memories.....where was the registry office ?
I got married in a livingroom and on a boat :)
anne, it was in India Buildings on Victoria street in Edinburgh. It will be 16 years ago in March. they had two suites - the upstairs one was quite traditional and done in peach and cream colours with mahogany wood for the chairs etc, the downstairs was Italian style with hand painted scenes on the walls and pale coloured wood furniture - pale bluish & gold colours. Such a shame it has gone, but I believe the replacement (on George IV bridge?) is also lovely, but been to a wedding in a while.
karen, that sounds interesting - how did you end up on a boat?
