Hi
I have just finished burning off 40 years of paint from my front gates, and am down to the metal and rust.
Any ideas please, on what is best to do before I paint again, to get a few more years out of them.

Or, Just one coat of Hammerite paint which is available in all paint shops and Woolworths

An easier option would have been to have them shotblasted

If they are worth spending the money on you can have them galvanized, then paint them to guarantee no rust

Or as raysparx said, red oxide, then an undercoat and a topcoat

Hammerite is ok but because it is quite thick and they recomend you don`t brush it through like most paints, you can end up with quite a few runs

My husband has just had our very old gates (1937) sand blasted. They've been sprayed with red oxyde & he is about to spray them with black Hammerite.

Thank you all for the advice. I have bought the red oxide, and as suggested, will finish off with the Hammerite.

With hammerite you need to put it straight onto bare metal for it to work properly, Hammerite reacts with the metal, and also reacts with rust, if you red oxide first you will lose this reaction and the hammerite will just become rather expensive paint, which isnt doing much but looking good.
