See my post below called Did Jesus really exist? for the facts. All we have are stories (by unknown people in the case of the gospels) without a shred of evidence or eye-witness testimony.
Believe the Jesus story by all means, but you have no reason to call it history.

Its both ironic and amusing that people who do not believe in a god or follow a religion feel that they somehow qualify to mock other peoples beliefs.......
Atheists mock the religious precisely because they take themselves so seriously. The faithful believe in the ridiculous entirely on the "evidence" in a book that is not even self consistent let alone corroborated by the slightest shred of contemporary literature or archaeological evidence.
Then they expect to dictate clearly unfair and deeply prejudicial social policies on the basis of their particular interpretation of the stupid book while other can equally find passages that would dictate quite the opposite.
While that is ridiculous they descend to the utterly offensive by upholding the stories of holy genocide as evidence of the power and glory of their miserable deity.
I will no more give respect to that kind of philosophy than I would to that of other fascist beliefs such as Nazism. The stupidity of religion needs to be loudly and extensively mocked to help balance the rubbish promulgated by the believers. The youth of our societies are the future of our societies and they deserve to hear the truth so as to make an informed judgement.
In Western societies the Church is no longer able to murder those they call heretics so get used to being mocked and stop whinging about it.
