The plot sounds exactly like 'Dog Day Afternoon' in which Al Pacino plays a guy holding hostages in a bank he has tried to rob to get money for his boyfriends sex change, but that doesn't have Kevin Spacey or Denzil Washington in it! Are you maybe confusing DDA with The Negotiator in which Kevin Spacey talks policeman Samuel Jackson out of killing his hostages in a police office block?
Denzel Washington, in 'John Q', held an operation room staff hostage until they operated on his son.
The Negotiator
Yes its the negotiator.
The film you are thinking of was called Renegotiated. This film was made in 1998 but wasn't released in the UK until 1999 and was only released on video.
"Renegoiated" - no such film according to IMDB. I agree with boognish - it sounds like 'dog day afternoon' is the film you saw but where you got Kevin and Denzil from i've no idea
rja211077, What kind of fool are you not to remember the 1984 movie "Renegotiated" Directed by Claus Verben, a brilliant German Director, who died in 1986, "Renegotiated" was his last movie and was considered to be his best, and was nominated for 5 Oscars in 1987 on its re-release. The Movie you are after is Dog Day Afternoon, staring Al Pacino, John Cazale directed by Sidney Lumet Renegotiated also stared Al Pacino and John Cazale, and is sometime confused for Dog day aftrenoon, and some might say is far better.
perhaps you could explain to me why neither the Internet Movie Database nor allmovie.com have a listing for Renegotiated, nor for Claus Verben, nor is there any similar film listed in either Al Pacino's or John Cazale's filmography? Are you winding us up?
and here is the list of academy award winners and nominees for 1987: http://uk.imdb.com/Sections/Awards/Academy_Awards_
USA/1987.
